Anna University Tirunelveli was also known as the Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli was established on 17th September 2007 by a Tamil Nadu Government Act No.28 of 2007 from the splitting of Anna University (main) in the same year. As of 2011 it is also known as Anna University Regional Office Tirunelveli or Regional Office Anna University Tirunelveli Region because of the September 14, 2011 bill, passed to merge back the universities. But as of February 2012, the separate universities are still operating as they were before the merger. The University is bestowed with powers to grant affiliations to engineering colleges situated within the 5 districts - Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari. The Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli has also established two University Colleges of Engineering, at Thoothukudi and Nagercoil during the academic year 2009-10. University V.O.Chidambaranar College of Engineering, Thoothukudi campus encompasses 25 acres of land and University College of Engineering, Nagercoil Campus also comprises of 25 acres of land. As of 2010, there are 53 Self-financing Colleges and 18 Newly affiliated Colleges that come under the University. In order to identify the need for effective communication skills, the Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli pioneered the introduction of Communication Skills Laboratory for five semesters (II semester to VI semesters) for the students of all colleges under Anna University Tirunelveli. The curriculum is designed in such a way that the engineering students can acquire precise, clear and effective communication skills to compete with their counterparts elsewhere in the world.
